Critical point drying is an approach to a reduce artefacts that occur during the drying process, especially during the preparation of (but not limited to) biological samples. In the course of the process the water in the sample is stepwise exchanged by liquid carbon dioxide. In the final drying step, the CO₂ is then released from the sample at the critical point and thus avoiding any surface tension related deformation of the sample surface.
