Our newest paper on biomolecule-polymer material interactions digs into the effect of side chains introduced into poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). In a very interesting cooperation with the Frey group from the University of Mainz, we found that a certain fraction of short side chains introduced via the comonomer glycidyl methyl ether can completely prevent binding to backbone-specific anti-PEG antibodies! Great to see it published in Advanced Science! more

CRC1551 Retreat

From November 4-6, 2025, we met with the CRC1551 crew to exchange science from the different projects and discuss analytical questions. Also lots of future planning going on! more

New device!

The newest addition to our group is a Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis device! We are quite thrilled to advance our method portfolio and can now determine nanoparticle concentrations much more reliably, gain another sizing technique and obtain information about single or double labeled particle fractions.

Poster Award

We are very excited that Max won the Best Poster Award at the Symposium on Nanomaterials for Tumor Immunotherapy on January 24-25, 2025! The poster was about „In vivo targeting of splenic and hepatic cDC1 cells via antibody functionalized liposomes“ with a focus on the role of characterization and quality control for successful targeting. Congrats Max! more

New Paper!

We are happy that our most recent article about protein functionalization is now out in Advanced Materials Interfaces! You can read about how functional groups influence protein structure and stability, which is great to know for further application as targeting moieties.

We are very happy to share that Mareike‘s PhD work is now out in Nanoscale Horizons! Check out our interesting findings about anti-PEG antibody prevalence in the German population and how much of these antibodies we find in the protein corona of PEGylated nanocarriers.

A bug's life: ant communication and waterproofing

PD Dr. Florian Menzel investigates the layer of cuticular hydrocarbons on ants, which helps them communicate and protects them from moisture. We are very happy to collaborate in this project! By measuring the melting ranges of the CHCs, we could find out that the CHC layers always consist of solid-liquid mixtures at ambient temperatures - similar to icecubes in a glass of water. more

New EU FET-OPEN project Ves4Us has launched

In the project Ves4Us that runs for a total of three years, scientists from Italy, Ireland, Switzerland and Slovenia are now working together with the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) in Mainz. The focus is put on extracellular vesicles from a natural source for tailor-made nanomaterials, where the team at MPI-P works mainly on the surface modification of the carriers. more

Starting the project LODE within EU JPND programme

In the project "Loss of neurotrophic factors in neurodegenerative dementias: Back to the crossroads of proteins" (LODE) researchers are focusing on understanding more about the disease developments and -especially at MPIP - developing nanocarrier devices for the transport of drugs into brain cells. Funding is provided via the EU joint programme - Neurodegenerative Disease Research for three years. more

Group Prize at Leibniz Young Polymer Scientist Forum

Together with a team of three other young researchers, Claudia Weber and Solveig Bartelt from the MPIP won the prize for the best group presentation regarding current research challenges. The Leibniz Young Polymer Scientist Forum was held on June 28-29, 2018 at the DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials in Aachen. more
