Solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Applications

Elucidating Dynamic Molecular Processes in Solutions

Solution NMR spectrocopy is a very powerfull and widely used tool for the characteriztion of molecular structures obtained from chemical synthesis. Routine NMR measurements performed of isolated molecules dissolved deuterated solvents provide detailed and unambiguous insight to the molecular structure. These measurements can be done 24/7 at MPI-P in self service with minor support by a technician if needed, and are a prerequisit for the solution NMR measurement preformed in our NMR group.

Solution NMR studies in the context of the NMR group typically focus molecular processes during or after phase separation in a liquid environments like e.g. in polymersomes or aggregation processes of oligo peptides. In most cases questions about the physical behavior on the molecular level of the complex hirachical organized systems are addressed. In many cases, the interplay of the analyzed structures and solvent molecules is the key for the under standing of the ongoing processes. The focus to local spatial proximities and dynamic processes on the molecular level leads to studies very similar to those performed in solid-state NMR, although the applied NMR methods have to be tailored for the different environments.
